Zakat
📖 The Recipients of Zakat — Detailed Explanation
In Surah At-Tawbah, Ayah 60, Allah Almighty clearly identifies the people who are entitled to receive Zakat. This shows that Zakat should be given to the categories specified by Allah, rather than being spent indiscriminately on every type of good cause.
1. The Poor — Fuqara
These are people who do not have sufficient wealth or income to meet their basic needs. Zakat can help them with essential expenses such as food, clothing, housing, and other necessary living costs.
2. The Needy — Masakin
A Miskin is also financially needy. Such a person may have some income or possessions, but they are insufficient to meet all of their essential needs. Helping genuinely needy people through Zakat is one of the purposes mentioned in the Qur'an.
3. Zakat Administrators — Al-'Amilina Alayha
These are people officially appointed to collect, manage, calculate, and distribute Zakat. Under the relevant Islamic rules, they may receive a portion of Zakat for their authorized work.
4. Those Whose Hearts Are to Be Reconciled — Al-Mu'allafatu Qulubuhum
This category refers to people whose hearts are to be brought closer to Islam or whose relationship with Islam is to be strengthened. Scholars have discussed the specific circumstances and rulings related to this category based on the Qur'an and Sunnah.
5. Freeing Slaves — Fi'r-Riqab
Allah mentions using Zakat for the liberation of enslaved people. This reflects the importance Islam placed on freeing people from slavery and bondage in the society of that time.
6. Those in Debt — Al-Gharimin
These are people who have incurred a legitimate debt and are genuinely unable to repay it. If they meet the conditions of Zakat eligibility, they may be assisted with Zakat to relieve their financial burden.
7. In the Cause of Allah — Fi Sabilillah
Fi Sabilillah means spending in the cause of Allah. Classical Islamic scholars particularly discussed this category in relation to fighting in Allah's cause, while the detailed application of this category has differences among scholars. Therefore, every charitable or beneficial activity should not automatically be considered a Zakat expense without considering the relevant Islamic rulings.
8. The Stranded Traveler — Ibn As-Sabil
This refers to a traveler who becomes financially stranded during a journey and lacks the means to reach their destination or access their wealth. If they fulfill the conditions of eligibility, they can be helped from Zakat.
💰 Where Should We Give Zakat?
When giving Zakat, it is important to identify genuine eligible recipients, especially poor and needy people, struggling families, and eligible debtors around us. Zakat is intended to provide financial assistance to those entitled to it and to fulfill the obligation Allah has placed upon those who possess qualifying wealth.
It is also important to remember that Zakat and voluntary charity (Sadaqah) are not exactly the same. Zakat has specific rules and eligible recipients, while voluntary charity can generally be given more broadly.
🤲 May Allah enable us to pay Zakat correctly, recognize those who are genuinely entitled to it, and use our wealth in ways that please Him. Ameen.
